THE INSTAGRAM ALGORITHM UPDATE: What It Means For Your Feed

Have you noticed a change in your Instagram This Week?

The answer is probably a big fat YES and this is all because Instagram have rolled out their new Algorithm.

What does the Instagram Algorithm update mean for your feed?

In a nutshell, Instagram’s new algorithm will focus on relevancy rather than timespan. For example, rather than photos showing up in your feed in chronological order, they will now be shown according to how Instagram’s new algorithm believes you will be interested in the posted content, also taking into account your relationship with the person who is posting.

Of course, this will also be likely to have a knock on effect to your number of likes and photo interactions, due to less or more people seeing your photos in their feed going forward.

In this blog post, Instagram pushed the “positive” benefits of their new algorithm update:

“You may be surprised to learn that people miss on average 70 percent of their feeds. As Instagram has grown, it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This means you often don’t see the posts you might care about the most.”

For example, they go on to state that:

“If your favorite musician shares a video from last night’s concert, it will be waiting for you when you wake up, no matter how many accounts you follow or what time zone you live in. And when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won’t miss it.”

In summary, you will now be most likely to see on your feed:

1. More posts from accounts whose photos you usually like and comment on.

2. Posts Instagram’s Algorithm believes you will be most interested in will show up first.

3. More targetted ads for your “interests”.

Which, personally, I think point 3 is one of the main reasons why Instagram has updated their algorithm. To gain more revenue from advertisers (as they can now claim they are more targeted to your chosen audience). Rather than thinking of the user first.

I am sure I am not the only one to think that I can better curate what photos I want to see in my feed than a computer can: right?
